How to Insure a Ring in Perth: Valuation, Contents and Travel

Clients often arrive with a diamond certificate and assume the insurance question is settled. It is not. A grading report describes the stone. It does not state what it would cost to replace the ring, and it is not a document an insurer will treat as a current valuation.
We do not sell insurance. We do valuations in-house so you can take an honest figure to whoever covers your jewellery. What follows is the conversation we have across the bench in Cottesloe, in plain terms.
Is a diamond certificate the same as a valuation?
No. A grading report from GIA or a similar laboratory describes one diamond's 4Cs, proportions and plot. It is not an appraisal and it states no replacement value. For cover you need a current jewellery valuation of the whole piece: metal, setting, side stones and the centre stone together.
The report number on a girdle inscription ties paper to a stone. It does not tell an insurer what it would cost to remake that ring in Perth next year. Those are different jobs, and mixing them up is how people discover a gap after a loss.
How should I insure a ring in Perth?
We do not recommend a named insurer. In general, specialist itemised jewellery cover lists each piece, often travels worldwide, and typically carries a lower excess. Ordinary Australian home-contents policies of the RAC or SGIO type often cap unspecified jewellery and travel poorly. Read your own policy. Ask whether jewellery is itemised, what the excess is, and whether overseas wear is covered.
A contents policy is written for a house. A ring that leaves the house every day is a different risk. If the jewellery section is a single cap for 'unspecified valuables', a significant engagement ring can sit above that cap without anyone noticing until a claim.
What does an in-house valuation involve?
We examine the piece in the Cottesloe workshop, record the metal, the making and the stones as they actually are, and prepare a valuation for insurance. Book an essentials or concierge appointment, or call the showroom. The figure is for replacement in the current market, not a sale price and not a certificate grade.
Bring any existing reports you have. They help us identify the stone. They do not replace seeing the ring. If the piece has been resized, remodelled or had a stone replaced since the last valuation, say so. The document should describe the ring you wear now.

What should I ask my insurer?
Three questions settle most of the confusion. Is this ring itemised on the schedule, or sitting under a general jewellery cap? What excess applies to a jewellery claim? Does cover follow you overseas, including wear, or only while the piece is at home?
If you travel, ask about pairs and sets, and about whether a claim requires the original purchase receipt as well as a valuation. We can provide the valuation. We cannot answer for a policy we did not write.
How often should a valuation be updated?
When the piece changes (a resize, a remodel, a new stone) or when your insurer asks for a current figure. Metal and diamond markets move. An old valuation can leave a gap between what the paper says and what it would cost to remake the ring.
If you have never had a valuation, start with one before a long trip or before you put the ring on a contents policy and assume it is enough. That conversation is quieter than a claim.
Frequently asked questions
Is a GIA certificate a jewellery valuation?
No. A GIA report describes the diamond. It states no replacement value. For insurance you need a current valuation of the whole ring, which we prepare in-house in Cottesloe.
Do you recommend a jewellery insurer?
No. We describe the kind of cover, not a brand. Specialist itemised jewellery cover usually lists each piece and travels better than ordinary home contents. Read your own policy.
Do you do insurance valuations in Perth?
Yes. Valuations and insurance assessments are done in-house by appointment at 18 Napoleon Street, Cottesloe. Book an essentials visit or call (08) 9385 5330.
