Ruby is the red variety of corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, and at 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond in hardness. That durability is why ruby suits an engagement ring or an everyday ring as happily as a pair of earrings. The pieces in this collection include ruby halo and engagement rings, a ruby and diamond eternity ring, halo and stud earrings and pendants, with Burmese rubies among them, in 18ct yellow, white and rose gold and 950 platinum.
With rubies, colour leads. Tone and saturation decide how a ruby reads on the hand, and they are hard to judge on a screen, which is why we compare stones in daylight at the atelier. Diamonds around and beside a ruby are natural, set in our own workshop, and chosen to frame the red rather than compete with it.
If the right piece is not here, we make it. A ruby commission follows the same path as our other bespoke work: the stone chosen in person, then design, setting and finishing under one roof in Cottesloe.
