Few decisions in buying an engagement ring generate more confusion — or more quietly one-sided advice — than natural versus lab-grown. Both are real diamonds. Both will test as diamond on a thermal probe. And yet they are not the same thing, and the difference matters more to some buyers than the industry often admits.

We work with natural diamonds, so you might expect us to dismiss the alternative. Instead, let me lay out what we actually tell clients across the bench: the honest differences, what each offers, and how to decide what matters to you.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes — chemically, physically and optically, a lab-grown diamond is diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same hardness, brilliance and fire as a mined stone, and even a trained gemmologist cannot tell them apart with the naked eye. Distinguishing the two requires laboratory equipment that detects growth patterns and trace elements.

The difference is not what they are. It's how they came to exist — and what that origin means for rarity, value and, for many people, sentiment.

The real difference is origin, not appearance

A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over one to three billion years, carried to the surface by ancient volcanic activity, and recovered in finite supply. A lab-grown diamond is created in weeks in a controlled chamber, by one of two methods — HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapour deposition) — and can be produced in effectively unlimited quantity.

One is a finite thing the earth made once. The other is a manufactured product that can be made again tomorrow. Both can be beautiful; only one is rare.

What about price and long-term value?

Lab-grown diamonds cost significantly less than natural diamonds of equivalent size and grade — often a fraction of the price — which is their genuine appeal: more size for the budget. That gap exists precisely because supply is unlimited.

The same abundance is their weakness as a store of value. As production scales, lab-grown prices have fallen steadily, and a lab-grown stone purchased today will likely be worth less tomorrow. Natural diamonds, being finite, have historically held value far more reliably. For a piece intended as an heirloom — or simply as something that retains worth — that trajectory matters.

What the certificate won't tell you

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be certified by respected laboratories, and the 4Cs are graded identically. A certificate will confirm quality, and reputable grading always discloses whether a stone is natural or laboratory-grown.

What no certificate captures is the intangible: whether it matters to you that your stone is a billion years old and one of a finite number, or a marvel of modern engineering made last month. Neither answer is wrong. But it's a question worth asking yourself, because it's the one that tends to decide people.
