How much does an engagement ring cost in Australia?

A natural diamond engagement ring in Australia commonly costs several thousand dollars and can run well into five figures. In our own ready-made collection, published prices start at $3,830, the median ring is $8,950, and half of all rings sit between $6,990 and $13,500. The centre stone decides most of that difference.

Those figures are the prices shown on our product pages on 30 September 2026, including GST. Every jeweller's range is different, but the forces behind it are the same everywhere, which is why they are worth understanding before you compare anyone's numbers.

What moves the price of an engagement ring?

Three things account for almost the entire price: the centre stone, the metal and the making. Understanding which one you are paying for lets you spend deliberately rather than accidentally, and it is the fastest way to make two very different quotes comparable.

Is the three months' salary rule real?

No. The salary rules began as diamond advertising in the twentieth century, not as advice, and the multiplier grew as the campaigns did. There is no correct fraction of an income to spend on a ring, and a jeweller who quotes one is selling, not guiding.

A better rule is to decide what matters to the person wearing it, whether that is size presence, brilliance, a particular colour or a specific design, and then protect that one thing while being flexible on everything that is invisible at wearing distance.

What does a wedding band cost?

A wedding band usually costs a fraction of the engagement ring, because the metal and the making do most of the work. Plain and lightly set bands sit at the lower end; full eternity bands, where diamonds run all the way around, sit higher because every stone is set by hand.

Do natural diamonds cost more than lab-grown?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond costs significantly less than a natural diamond of the same size and grade, because it can be produced in effectively unlimited quantity. That abundance is also why lab-grown prices have kept falling, which matters if you want a ring that holds its value.

Not necessarily. When a ring is designed and made in the jeweller's own workshop, a bespoke piece of the same quality often costs a similar amount to a comparable ready-made ring, because you pay for materials and bench hours rather than a manufacturer's margin. Bespoke earns its place when you want a specific stone, an exact fit or a design that does not exist in a cabinet.
