Gold vs Platinum: What Lasts on a Perth Hand

The metal of a daily ring is a workshop question, not a mood board. In Cottesloe we make both 18ct gold and platinum, and we choose them against how a person uses their hands, how they want the colour to age, and what already sits on the next finger.

Perth adds its own facts: salt air, bright light, and a lot of time outdoors. Those things do not ruin either metal. They do show the difference between a white gold finish that needs rhodium and a platinum surface that stays the colour it was made.

Should I choose gold or platinum for everyday wear?

Both are made here and both last. 18ct gold is the house standard in yellow, white and rose: warm, familiar, and kind to most skin tones. Platinum is denser, naturally white, and well suited to a ring that will take knocks. Choose against the life of the hand, not against a trend.

Gold at 18ct is a serious jewellery alloy, not a thin plate. It will scratch, as all jewellery metals do, and those marks can be polished in the workshop. Platinum also marks, but it tends to displace rather than wear away, so the ring keeps its weight. That is why platinum is often the quieter choice for a claw that must hold a diamond for decades.

What does rhodium on white gold actually mean?

White gold is a gold alloy finished with rhodium so it reads bright white. The rhodium is a surface. It wears, especially on the high points of a shank and under a wedding band. Replating is a routine in-house service, typically every year or two depending on wear.

If you dislike the idea of a periodic refresh, platinum is the honest alternative. It does not need rhodium to stay white. It will develop a softer sheen, which some clients prefer and some do not. We show both in daylight so the difference is seen, not described.

How does Perth climate change the decision?

Heat, swimming and salt do more to gold alloys than to platinum. Chlorine attacks gold if rings are worn in a pool. We still tell every client to take rings off for gym, gardening and cleaning, whatever the metal. The climate does not forbid gold. It rewards a little discipline.

White metals show sunscreen and salt more readily as a film. A soft cloth after a beach day is enough for most pieces. If a white gold ring has gone creamy at the edges, that is usually worn rhodium, not the gold failing. Bring it in.

Can I mix gold and platinum?

Yes, when it is a decision. A yellow gold engagement ring beside a platinum band will always read as two colours. Some couples want that. Others want the pair to look like one thought. We match the existing ring when we can, and we say so when a mixed pair will look accidental.

Two-tone making is a different brief: gold and platinum in one piece, planned at the bench. That is not the same as buying a platinum band because the tray had one in stock.

How do I pair a new band with a ring I already own?

Bring the ring. Colour, width and the way the shanks meet matter more than the name of the metal. We can make a gold band for a platinum engagement ring, or the reverse, if you have seen the pair in daylight and still want it. We can also remake a tired white gold band in platinum if rhodium appointments have become a chore.
